French-Algerian Renault factory opens Oran

Algeria has taken a first step into the motor trade after Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal inaugurated a joint French-Algerian Renault factory in the western city of Oran.

The move is being trumpeted as a boost to the country’s manufacturing sector as the oil rich nation moves towards making rather than buying goods.

Algeria’s Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal said: “This Renault factory is a win-win partnership, and we shall work for more plants on Algerian soil.”

Initially the factory will produce 25,000 Renault Symbol models, expected to rise to 75,000 a year.

The plant employs 125 workers to date with more jobs coming available down the road.
